Repairing Your Credit Yourself

It’s not always necessary to use a professional debt consolidation company to repair your credit. You can learn to do it on your own just like countless others before you. All that is required is a little self-determination and some patience on your part. The process of repairing your credit yourself does not happen overnight. Even if you were to hire a professional debt management service, it will still take a period of time to repair your credit score.

The gatekeepers of your personal credit information are three top credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Begin the process by requesting your credit report from the three credit bureaus. Examine each report to determine what they have on record concerning your personal and financial information. There is a good possibility that each report will be slightly different from the others, however the three reports combined should provide you a complete image of your credit history. You don’t have to pay for the reports because by law you are entitled to a free copy of each report annually.

Now that you have copies of all three of your credit reports you need to go over each carefully and in detail. It is likely that you will find at least one error on one of the reports. It is even possible that you will find multiple errors on all three reports. You should know that these reports are compiled from the information that is sent to the credit bureaus by your creditors and it is not the responsibility of the bureaus to validate that the information is accurate. It is really up to you, the consumer, to make sure your credit report contains no inaccuracies. There are usually some standard mistakes that are found on credit reports like old and outdated information, typing mistakes, and even credit related reporting from another person with your same last name.

When you find inaccurate information notify the reporting agencies and have it removed from your report. This process by itself can have a major impact on your credit score. Having this information removed from your report is important but not the only way to increase your score. It is also important to note that accurate negative information is something that will not be easy to get off your report so it’s best to look to the future and begin to implement good financial decisions. Good financial decisions involve: making monthly payments on time, using credit only when necessary and learning how to save. Creditors like to see their customers make payments month after month with no missed payments. This credit flow or consistency is very important in the eyes of the lender and if you are consistent long enough; your credit negatives will slowly drop off your report.

If you have many credit cards open that you don’t use much anymore, begin to close out some of these accounts and keep the number open to about 2 or 3 cards. The more cards you have, the more difficult it becomes to maintain them all. To close down a credit card account call the credit card company and request the account be closed. It’s very important to make sure your credit report indicates that the account was “closed” by request of the cardholder. Just cutting up your card does not close the account.

Once you get your credit card spending under control, you can learn more about repairing your credit yourself by learning from other people who have been in your same financial situation. There are all kinds of groups of people on the Internet discussing credit in places like: personal finance blogs, message boards, forums, etc. You can visit these websites and interact by asking questions and getting free help from other members. You will begin the process of truly educating yourself on financial matters and will be well on the way to repairing your credit yourself. Stick to it, and your will eventually reach your goal.
